Frequently Asked Questions

  • Has internship been extended to two years?

No. General registration will still be granted at the end of PGY1 (once all mandatory requirements are met), the definition of an internship (PGY1) will remain the same and the timeframe to complete internship remains three years.

  • Why does the Framework include PGY2?

The inclusion of PGY2 is to formalise the ongoing support, education and supervision that PGY2s require. In Canberra and South-East NSW, the PGY2 year was already considered to be part of prevocational training; the National changes formalise this arrangement. The change ensures that PGY2 doctors across Australia receive appropriate supervision and are offered education opportunities to meet their CPD requirements.

  • What happens at the end of PGY1?

Provided that all mandatory requirments are met, general registration is granted at the end of PGY1.

  • What happens at the end of PGY2?

At the conclusion of PGY2 (once all necessary requirements are met) an AMC Certificate of Completion will be issued.

It is important to note that entry into a College training program during PGY2 prior to receiving a Certificate of Completion is still possible, depending on the College requirements.
